"Medeski Martin & Wood"

Since 1991, the unclassifiable trio of John Medeski, Billy Martin and Chris Wood have explored the sonic space where avant-garde jazz, jam-rock and world music meet. As comfortable with tunes by Bob Marley as they are with Thelonious Monk, and composing their own genre-bending pieces, the group features Hammond B-3 organ and experimental percussion effects. Guest host Mark Leviton will lead us through their improvisational maze, including a visit to their most recent 3-part Radiolarians album series.

"The Other #1"

Join Notes From Underground host Julia Boorinakis Harper as she guest-hosts on The Other Side to examine The Other #1, a 32 track, 87 minute cassette magazine featuring music previously unpublished or unheard of before that time. Published in 1982 by Mikail Graham and former KVMR Music Director George Parsons, it was originally distributed by Rough Trade Records, and was filled with unique works by the likes of Paul Dresher, Philip Perkins, The Young Penguins, Pope Paul Pot, plus twenty eight others.

"David Thomas - The Fabulous Sequel"
Join guest-host Ric O'Shea for another TOS special featuring part 2 of the music and wit of David Thomas lead singer for Pere Ubu, The Pedestrians, 18 Monkeys on a Dead Man's Chest and many more. Sure to be one fine night of other side music and song!

"A Word-In-Sideways"
Does it seem odd that political "liberals" champion some freedoms while opposing others, or that so-called "conservatives" do the same in the opposite direction? Maybe it's time to question the left-right dichotomy and look for a consistent alternative. Join guest-host T. E. Wolfe for a special Word-In-Edgewise edition of The Other Side. Expect an exploration of libertarian thought and principles, featuring music and challenging ideas for all. Angry left- and/or right-wing callers encouraged!

"John Scofield - Guitar Player"
Emerging in the seventies as part of the Billy Cobham-George Duke band, Scofield was touring extensively with Miles Davis by the eighties, cementing his reputation as perhaps the funkiest jazz guitarist working. Never far from rhythm & blues roots, he recorded a tribute to Ray Charles in 2005 and a New Orleans-inspired gospel album in early 2009. He's also become a favorite on the jam band scene, playing as a sideman with Phil Lesh, Deep Banana Blackout and Medeski, Martin & Wood. Guest host Mark Leviton will reveal the many sides of one of the most prolific players in the world of jazz.

Join host Mikail Graham for an evening featuring the music of Hemispheres, a group of top flight musicians who play a blend of African, Middle Eastern, Asian and South American instruments with more traditional Jazz instrumentation. Nevada County Jazz camp founder and bassist Bill Douglass along with Hemispheres founder Ian Dogole, will join Mikail to preview "Crossroads" their newest release, and much more. "John Abercrombie - Guitar Player"

Join guest host Mark Leviton as he profiles jazz guitarist John Abercrombie, an expert on both acoustic and electric instruments. Trained at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, he first gained attention in drummer Billy Cobham’s group Spectrum in the late sixties. A mainstay of the ECM label from his first record “Timeless” in 1974, he's released dozens of his own albums as well as collaborations with Gil Evans, Gato Barbieri, McCoy Tyner, Ralph Towner and many others.

"Trey Anastasio - The Art of Improv"

Since founding the experimental improv band Phish in 1983, Trey Anastasio has continually incorporated free jazz, prog-rock and folk elements into his compositions. He recently released his first symphonic piece “Time Turns Elastic” for voice, guitar and orchestra. He’s collaborated with Sun Ra, bassist Les Claypool, composer Philip Glass, and issued ten solo albums of idiosyncratic material. Join guest host Mark Leviton as he profiles a guitarist and songwriter who recognizes no musical boundaries.

Join guest host Ric O'Shea for a journey through the musical weirdness of Howard Kaylan ("Eddie") and Mark Volman ("Flo" aka "Phlorescent Leech").
Both were the original founding members of the Top 40 pop group The Turtles and later went on to join Frank Zappa's Mothers Of Invention. The title says it all so tune at your own risk as this other side is intended for mature audiences.

"William Scott Bruford"

Join guest host Ric O'Shea for a for a two hour look at the highly precise, polyrhythmic drumming of Bill Bruford, the former drummer for prog rock bands Yes and King Crimson, a touring drummer for Genesis, and more recently changing direction to lead his own jazz group, Earthworks. He's now retired from music-making in 2009, but continues to run his two record labels and to speak about music.

Join host Mikail Graham for a two hour trip focusing on the missing links from the the psychedelic scene which arguably saw it's peak in the late 60's yet continues on to this day. "Toshiko Akiyoshi"

As a woman, she’s had to find her way in the predominantly male world of jazz, but Toshiko Akiyoshi has become a successful composer, arranger, pianist and big band leader, and was named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master in 2007. Often compared to Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus, she combines traditional Japanese instrumentation and melodies with American be-bop to create a unique multicultural sound. Guest host Mark Leviton will feature her solo work and that of her saxophonist husband Lew Tabackin, and will survey the 30-year history of The Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra.

"Robert Fripp: Within and Without King Crimson"

Guest host Ric O'Shea will take you on a aural journey through the music of this legendary guitarist who has been making records since 1967. Fripp has been a part of ground breaking work with Brian Eno, David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, David Sylvian, David Byrne and of course King Crimson, the band that he started in 1968 and which is still going strong 40 years later.

Join guest host DJ Electrolysis who will be featuring a tribute to the female influence on a scene which started in the early 80s and continues on, combining elements of dark and light, life and death, the horrific and the beautiful. Many genres of electronic music will be played, from happy synthpop, beautiful yet sad darkwave, harsh angry foot stomping electro-industrial, to electronic influenced medieval and dedicated to artists of both domestic and foreign origin.

Guitarist, soul-singer, songwriter and tireless tour hound, Warren Haynes started out playing music professionally as a teenager, landing in David Allan Coe’s group, before he came to the attention of The Allman Brothers Band, which he joined in 1989, making a reputation as a true heir of Duane Allman. Nowadays Haynes tours with his band Gov’t Mule, sits in with Blues Traveler, Derek Trucks, Dave Matthews, Phil Lesh, John Scofield, Taj Mahal & others, and raises money for charity through annual music festivals. Guest
host Mark Leviton will include many rare recordings in a survey of Warren’s
wide-ranging, rockin’ and jammin' world.
